Dear Cousin,
I now take my pen in hand to let you know that I am in the hospital at Annapolis, Maryland. My leg is not healed any yet. I am out of money and among strangers here. The government owes 4 months pay which is 54 dollars and they will not pay us till we go to our regiment and my leg will not get well so that I can go to my regiment and if you will send me five dollars I will pay you when I am paid off. I am out of money and out of paper and stamps to and if you have got 5 dollars that you can trust me with till I get paid, I shall be very much obliged. If you want any interest on it, I will pay it for I need the money very much indeed. I have not got a cent to my name and now I must close by bidding you good night.
