Brig Gen Sprague
Adjutant General State of New York
Dear Sir,
You will perhaps think of my request unusual, knowing that I am from the State of Pennsylvania. I have a son of 19 who is desirous of entering the cavalry service. I think he would make a good officer. He has been with me for the last three months and has seen something of what was going on. I have expected an appointment for him from the State of Pennsylvania; but there is some disagreeable hitch in it, which ought not to have occurred to one like myself, who has been identified with Pennsylvania troops, the Army of the Potomac and the campaign last year that culminated in Pennsylvania.
If you can aid me in securing such an appointment I will esteem it a very great favor.
Very Respectfully Yours,
A. A. Humphreys
