Description

This grouping consists of 28 original Civil War letters written by Amos B. Hawley of Company D, 5th Vermont Infantry. Each letter has been carefully transcribed, and complete transcriptions are included with the collection.

Amos B. Hawley enlisted as a Private on September 20, 1861, and mustered into Company D, 5th Vermont Infantry on October 31, 1861. During his service, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Hawley was wounded in action on May 5, 1864, during the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia, and was honorably mustered out of service on October 15, 1864.
