March 9th 1865

My Dear Mary,

Your kind letter of February 26th was received this day with much joy and delight. Oh you do know how I longed to hear from you for nothing can tell how much happiness I appreciated by receiving a sweet letter from you or from one so dearly loved as you.
So I shall endeavor to fulfill all that rests on my heart. Part for I love to always endeavor to please the face and Mary if I should be so lucky as to get a wife I shall always try to please her at all times for there never was the man lived that respected the kindness more than I do and I hope that I shall always shall love them as I now do. Ok Mary would to God this night that I could see you.

Dear Mary, if you will be pleased to do so I wish you would send me your picture in your next letter you can have it taken on a small plate and send it to me. Mary, please have it taken in your summer clothes for I always love to see a young lady in her summer clothes for they look so nice. Mary, I will send you mine in my next letter too. For the sooner you write the sooner you will get my face if you want to see my face you will write soon. I know so I will rest easy and wait patiently for your answer. Ok sweet Mary if I could only bestow the sweet kiss upon your sweet lips that I did taste last winter when I was there. So I shall disperse that discourse for the present. Mary you must excuse me this time for I have been hard at work all day for we are building quarters in town and I can hardly write this evening. So I will close for this time hoping to see you soon. So goodbye Dear Mary.

May God be with you this night for I cannot.
