Dear Friend,
I take this opportunity to write you a few lines to inform you that I am still in the land of the living and in good health and hope this few lines will find you the same. I suppose you have heard of the Rebels leaving Corinth where we supposed to have a big battle. General Beauregard will not dare to stand here. The weather is pretty warm but the soldiers are in good spirits and health. The Rebels are seated all over and a good many give themselves up every day. I don’t believe they can stand it any better then we can for they all look pale and thin. Take all in all and they are an unhealthy looking set of people. There is nothing planted here. All this time I have seen nothing but one field of corn and some potatoes and a little patch of cotton. Where we are now is a good looking country but all for waste. I am in hope now that this war will soon be ended so that the poor people can have a better living. We will soon have to keep them from starving for the Rebel army burns up all their commissary goods when they retreat and steal everything they like. You must know now that we are in Mississippi and may be in Virginia before long. When you get this letter you will tell John to write me a few lines and let me know how he is getting along. And I would like to know how all your neighbors are getting along and how James Wickham’s health is and the old Sally and all. Cousin James Wickham is doing pretty well his health is tolerable good. About William and James Wilson I could say nothing for that regiment was left at Columbia, Tennessee. I must bring my letter to a close so good by to all of you. My best respects to you all.
From yours and Wickham
