Camp Near Petersburg
July 3rd 1864
Dear Sir,
According to agreement, I proceed to give you the particulars of your Brother’s capture. With Wilson’s division of Cavalry started on a raid and after being out some six or seven days, we made an attack on Roanoke Bridge and it was there where your brother was wounded and he was taken in my ambulance and the expedition was returning to camp. And got as far as the Petersburg and Richmond railroad abut ten miles from camp when we were attacked again by a much larger force than we had and they drove us back with a considerable loss on our side. We had to unharness our horses and mount them and get out the best way we could. We just made out to get away and that was all. Your Brother’s wounds were not of a serious nature. He was wounded in the face. I think that the ball came out just back of the ear. And it affected his shoulder. I was very sorry to leave him. It was too bad to let a wounded man fall into the hands but we could not help it. Perhaps you would like to be informed who wrote this letter.
My name is Thomas E. Kilroy, a member of Company F, 13th New Hampshire Volunteers.
Yours truly,
T. K.
