Camp Near Fairfax Courthouse

December 23rd 1862

Friend Herra,

Fred Stanton gave me a letter from you to Cyrus and one from your Mother day before yesterday. But I have delayed writing on account the Doctor going to the City. He got back last night and brought news of the death of Cyrus at Alexandria General Hospital December 21st of fever. We were obliged to move him from Camp Vermont a little more than a week ago with 32 others in ambulances to Alexandria. He was not considered in danger at that time. But he failed rapidly after his removal. Although, I am told he had good care. That makes the ninth death in Company B. As many as all the rest of the Regiment. And there are several of the company sick now but none from Danville I believe.

That is all the particulars. I can get with regard to Cyrus’ death that would interest you. Probably you will not try to take him home for it would cost near a hundred dollars if you want yourself for embalming and transportation. And they will not carry him at all without embalming.

My health is poor but improving. I have had a touch of the “shakes”. I cannot write you any news that would interest you at this time. So I will stop.

I beg you will accept my sympathy and respects and I remain your Friend,

M. Blodgett

P.S. I have written to your Father today so they will hear as soon as you of the sad news.

Yours truly,

M. Blodgett
