Description

Original Civil War soldier's letter. 1 page written in period ink. Taylor organized the 1st regiment of Ducktails - 42nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was killed on July 2, 1863 in the Wheatfield at Gettysburg.

Camp near Alexandria, Virginia

March 19, 1862

My Dear Mother,

We are still here awaiting transport vessels to carry us to our destination. A rumor is afloat in camp this morning that we will embark at one o’clock today. I have not yet been able to see Bayard or to learn his whereabouts. I think I shall hear something from him today. However, he must certainly know we are here. We are all well and in fine spirits. Love to all.
