Description

Original Civil War soldier's letter. 2 pages written in period ink.

Laurel Creek, Ky. Feb 4th 1862

Dear Friend,

I am separated a considerable distance from you and the many friends that I love, and let me assure you that there is none of my friends that I more highly esteem than I do you. The pleasure that I have seen in your society and the many kindnesses I have received since I have been visitor at your house will be remembered by me as the happiest moments of my life. If it ever is my happy lot to return from the war, your house certainly will be among the first that I will visit. There is a great many other things of importance I might mention in this connection, but life is uncertain and a person should not speak of anything that is uncertain.

We are now ordered from London towards the Cumberland Gap and I expect we will soon be a fighting. We are going to be used as a picket guard, consequently we will have fighting every day. General Carter is commander here. Your kind little heart would be very much grieved if you were here and see how the Southern Army has destroyed and devastated the whole country.
In open day, they have come and taken peaceable citizens and sent them prisoners to the south. They have taken all the corn and everything to live on from the wives and families of those taken prisoner. I enclose a ballad. Give my love to your Pa and Ma. Remember me to Ellen & Rebecka. Write soon, direct:

Barboursville, Munday’s Battalion of Ky, Volunteers,
And believe me to be your sincere friend until death. Charlie Park
