Captain Rickman
Commanding, Company H
5th Tennessee Cavalry
Dear Friend,
You have no doubt learned of my being out of the service. I resigned because I could not return to the Old 5th and go out again into active service. I have been for some time scarcely able to get about.
And another reason. There are many worthy young officers who are entitled to and deserve promotion. Consequently, I thought it my duty to give place. I have not an unkind feeling to anyone in the regiment. There is not one and God knows it, that I would not be proud to meet you and them. It will always be my pride and pleasure to speak of.
Hoping to hear from you occasionally. Will close. May God bless you all, both officers and men and may you get through safe. And your last days be your best and happiest ones.
My regards to all.
Your friend,
W. B. Stokes
P.S. I have sent a note to the commander of the regiment, which I hope he will read to the men and then have it published, as requested.
Respectfully,
W. B. S.
