Description

Original Civil War soldier's letter. 3 pages, written in period ink. Captain Dewey informing the father of Private Alonzo W. Stevens of the soldiers death.

Washington, DC
April 9, 1862

Mr. Stevens

Dear Sir,

I have the painful duty to perform of acquainting you with the death of your brother. Had I his Father’s address, I should write to him.

He died on Sunday night at the privy from hemorrhage of the lungs. He had been unwell for some time and had bled some a few days previous to his death.

His body left today by express. The expense of the coffin and expressing was paid by voluntary subscriptions from members of the company. The body has been embalmed so that you need have no fears of its decomposition.

His effects will be sent on or brought by some member of the company. His account with the U.S. I will forward in a day or two with instructions as to the manner of collecting.

We sympathize deeply with you in your affliction. Allow me to bear testimony to his good qualities as a soldier.

He was always faithful and ready and was considered one of the most efficient in the place he filled.

As I remain in Washington, but a day or two, if you should wish any correspondence with me you will please direct Lowville, NY.

With cordial sympathy, I remain,

Very truly yours,

Lewis F. Dewey
Captain
