Dear Sister,
I now seat myself to answer your letter which I received a few days ago and was glad to hear from you and glad to hear you was well. I am well and I hope these few lines will find you still well. I suppose you want to hear all the (news). Our cavalry went out on a scout this morning and went about five miles from our outer pickets and halted to rest and the captain and one of the privates went out about two miles from the main company. When they were coming back they were attacked and the captain had his horse shot out from under him and wounded so he fainted and the private lost his horse and the Rebels robbed him of three revolvers that cost a hundred dollars and his sword and eighty dollars in money. They took his boots and hat and left him for dead but he came to and walked about a half mile and found the man that lost his horse and he went and got help and brought him to our hospital and they found eight bullet holes in him. He is alive now and don’t know as I can think of any more. The boys are well and send their love to you. Give my love to all the folks and write soon. So good evening. This is from your Brother Samuel McDaniel.
