Well Mary, here I am again sitting on my knapsack with my paper on my knee to write you a few lines once more. Yours of the 18th I read last night about dark and the day we have been mustered for pay. And I think that we will get our pay in a few days again. There is 25 dollars on the way somewhere for you. James M. Cole has been promoted to sergeant since he came back to the company. I got a letter from Dan last night. He says that Art has gone to the hospital at Alexandria sick. John is one of the corporals of the color guard. He says that John has got an easy place. You can write to him any time you want to. Direct to:
Washington, DC
Company F, 23rd Regiment, New York Volunteers
They are in Fauquier County, VA. He says that they have been all over Virginia. Dan says that there is only 53 men in his company to draw rations for.
There is quite a number in our company that are about worn out. We have had a hard time since we have been on this island.
Well Mary, I can’t write much this time. You must read Aunt Betsey’s letter. Write often. Direct as before. So good by for this time. This from your brother.
