Cochesett
April 14th 1865

Sir,

I thought I would write you a few lines to inform you that I, Patrick Dorgan of Company D, 58th Massachusetts Regiment, Private, and being a prisoner some seven months, was paroled and furloughed on the 10th of March for thirty days. And as I am now, and have had been suffering from chronic diarrhea and general debility, I have gotten my furlough extended for thirty days longer. I being instructed by my Captain, formerly Charles E. Churchill, to inform you so that you would know where I am. And I should not be considered a deserter. I should like dearly to be with my comrades and have the glory and honor of sharing the fate of capturing Richmond and harassing old Lee’s Army with them. Thanks be to providence that it has all been accomplished. I have been so feeble at the present time, that I despair of being able to join my regiment for some months. Give my best respects to all the boys. I would like to know if there is any account of Sergeant Charles E. Crocker. I understood he was among the missing and the names of those killed in Company D in the late battles.

I must close by wishing you all good luck, success and happiness on receiving this. I shall expect an immediate answer if possible.

I am your respectfully,

Patrick Dorgan
